River City Sportplex was originally founded in 1996 by a group from the Grassroots Organization in Grand Junction. It was purchased by the Koos family a few years later. Opened in 2006, the rink sits on a 4-acre property, with a backdrop of the beautiful Colorado National Monument and crossing through the Riverside Trail. Throughout the years, the rink was closed and reopened multiple times. Sadly, with Covid-19 hitting many businesses throughout the area, the rink succumbed to pandemic restrictions and closed once again in March of 2020. One year later, a private owner turned their passion for ice sports into reality and purchased the facility. After many long hours spent remodeling the facility, the rink was officially re-opened to the public on October 8, 2021. The new owners and management team seek to accommodate the growing local interest in ice sports in our Grand Valley community and provide a new source of family-friendly entertainment that can be enjoyed by all. River City Sportplex is the proud home to the River Hawk Youth Hockey program, the River Hawk Curling Club, River City Skating Club, the Colorado Mesa University Men’s Hockey team, Caprock High School Hockey team and the River City Learn to Skate Program. We also work diligently to provide all levels of play in the sports we offer from Learn-to-Play to elite training programs for experienced athletes. River City Sportplex currently provides Grand Valley residents the opportunity to experience Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Curling, Public Skating, Birthday Parties, Corporate Events, and much more!
With the new management team in place, the future looks bright for the River City Sportplex.
